If you have been looking for an additional vehicle or thinking of making a change in what sits in your driveway, you know there are not many bargains. Head to your local dealer showroom where you may very well be astounded at the window stickers of most vehicles. At least this can be said for those vehicles most enthusiasts would like to own.
There is at least one surprise for those who consider themselves drivers over just consumers. It comes in a package most might not think of when considering spirited automobiles. The Honda Civic generally is thought of as a very sensible and smart purchase. And, indeed it is, but you get even more when you tack the Si badge on the end of its name.
Granted, you could say the Civic Type R is the fastest and most performance-laden Honda, and you would be spot on. However, if you are looking for performance and sensible in the same package it would be wise to look toward the Si.
The 2020 Honda Civic Si carries a respectable price tag of just over $26,000 and is packed full of so many features you might wonder how they did that. To put a little perspective in here; the Civic R carries an extra 100 horsepower, 306 to be exact, while the Civic Si offers up 205 horsepower. However, the Type R carries a price of just under $38 K. Though we love the thought of having that extra horsepower we are sure that most owners will be even more excited about keeping that 10 grand in our pockets.
We spent a good bit of quality road time in the 2020 Civic Si and can honestly say, we enjoyed every minute. Well, nearly all since we did spend a little time sitting in traffic on our way to our favorite fun country roads. Thank goodness it didn’t take long; soon we were able to unleash the Civic Si and let it show just how well it can handle the fun stuff.
The engine responds to right pedal input immediately and the shifter for the manual transmission (yes, we said manual) is smooth, quick and precise. The combination of performance, handling and design give the 2020 Civic Si characteristics that few vehicles in this category can meet.
The 2020 Civic Si receives a few updates to exterior, which include revised front design with body-color and black trim. New LED headlamps with new LED fog light lend an edgier look.
As expected, Honda piles on the interior features and here we see updated sport seats accented by red trim. These bucket seats are firm without being stiff. They hold you and your passenger in place during more aggressive cornering while offering comfort on longer more mundane trips.
The interior design places nearly every control, switch and gauge within easy reach and view. There are plenty of storage alternatives with places to put nearly everything we seem to carry these days. As we know, our phones have become irreplaceable and Honda has built in plenty of USB ports and ways to store cables and phones in an abundance of ways.
Along with plenty of safety equipment, which includes the standard Honda Sensing suite of safety and driver assist systems, the standard list included Honda’s LaneWatch side-view cameras giving drivers a clear view of what is to the right of the vehicle with the right turn signal operating.
Of course, we have plenty of safety systems including Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™) incorporating Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) and Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) incorporating Lane Departure Warning (LDW). Automatic high beams are also part the Honda Sensing® package.
There is a bottom line to every vehicle we test, which goes beyond the convenience and safety features and the comfort and attractive styling. For us it is summed up by this: The 2020 Honda Civic Si is a competent sports sedan with sports car attributes at a price point that is just as satisfying as the drive.
